African Accents

Here’s

Thought we could have some music inspired by African rhythms and traditions…….

Anfaz - 3MA

Let’s start with the Kora music tradition from Mali.  Here the trio 3MA play Anfaz.  The music is enchanting and mesmeric.  Clearly it’s not Classical Guitar but this music has a strong influence on the guitar and we will see examples of that on this page.
3MA consists of Ballaké Sissoko from Mali on Kora, Driss El Maloumi from Morocco on the Oud and Rajery from Madagascar on the Valiha.

Jarabi - Derek Gripper

Recorded at the Long Street Slave Church in Cape Town, this is Derek Gripper’s arrangement of the Kora music of Toumani Diabaté. Taken from his 2012 recording “One Night On Earth” Derek Gripper has managed to condense the 21 string Kora music into a compelling version for the Classical Guitar.

Malinke Guitar - John Williams

Once again inspired by the Kora music of Mali, this is John Williams playing his own composition.  Featured on the recording Magic Box, with John Etheridge and often played live in the “Six Hands Guitar Trio” concerts.
